Journal Guest Review from Michelle

“This mansion is so unique and beautiful. It sure was a lucky find! Pam had lots of knowledge about the mansion and the city of Bloomington, which resulted in a delicious flatbread from Rosie’s Pub!

There’s an indescribable coziness about this place which includes the staff, the snacks and drinks, and the extra goodies in the bedroom and bathroom. In the evening, I cuddled up with a book and read for a while. Incredibly peaceful. The cozy robe made this experience even better, and the info downstairs was super informative & entertaining.

Will definitely be back when life allows it.

P.S. I haven’t had breakfast yet! super excited”

The Julia Vrooman Suite

The Julia Vrooman Suite, bathed in a bright and sunny atmosphere, welcomed Michelle with open arms. As she stepped inside, her eyes were immediately drawn to the large south and west windows, which offered a filtered view of the tree-lined street and maintained her privacy. The room exuded a sense of tranquility, allowing her to unwind after a long day of driving. And would welcome her back after an evening exploring charming downtown Bloomington, headlined with a dinner at historic Rosie’s Pub.

The queen-size bed in Julia’s Suite invite guests to sink into its embrace, while the European carved furniture and ornamental fireplace adds a touch of timeless elegance. Decorated in soothing shades of blue and gold, the room emanates a light and airy feel, creating an inviting ambiance that makes it an easy favorite among guests.

Private Attached Bath

Often guests are amazed that a home from the late 1800s has private bathrooms for each suite, seamlessly blending the old and the new. Every suite has a different and unique bathroom set up. Some have walk-in showers, others have antique tubs, and some have tub & shower combinations.

In the Julia Vrooman Suite, the pull-chain toilet and pedestal sink exude vintage charm, while the cultured marble walk-in shower offer a touch of contemporary luxury. It is the perfect choice for those who prefer a refreshing shower instead of a tub.

And every bathroom comes with the amenities all travelers have come to appreciate and expect including soap, shampoo, conditioner, and a hair dryer to make your stay more convenient. You’ll also find a makeup washcloth and locally made lip balm.

Gourmet Breakfast Included

The allure of Vrooman Mansion extends beyond its luxurious accommodations. Though Michelle wrote her review before she walked down for breakfast, we’re sure it was a highlight of her stay! The staff takes immense pride in preparing and serving the finest and freshest breakfast items, ensuring each guest’s experience is nothing short of extraordinary. From seasonal ingredients to specially blended coffee, flavored hot cocoas, and fine English teas, every aspect of the breakfast is designed to surprise and delight.

Guests savor a glass of juice and a piping hot beverage, while they eagerly await the hot entrée of the day. The staff’s dedication to exceeding expectations extends to accommodating dietary restrictions, ensuring that each guest feels valued and cared for. Breakfast becomes a delightful opportunity to meet fellow travelers, share stories, and forge new connections—a truly memorable start to the day.

A bit of History from 1869 to Now

When Michelle first arrived, she was provided with a tour of the mansion and history of its origins. Plus, all the common areas have additional material for guests to read and learn more about the Scotts, the Vroomans and the significant moments that happened here.

The mansion’s roots stretch back to the late 19th century when Matthew T. Scott and Julia Green moved into their grand home in 1869. The mansion witnessed the union of Julia’s sister, Letitia Green, with Adlai Stevenson, who would later become Vice President of the United States.

Julia Green Scott and her daughter Julia Scott Vrooman

Julia Scott Vrooman is the daughter who left an indelible mark on the mansion’s legacy. Julia’s love for her husband, Carl Vrooman, was palpable, and their circle of friends included political figures, renowned playwrights, and esteemed poets. Julia’s passion for entertaining and her homemade “Vrooman bread” were legendary, transcending borders as she shared her culinary delights with dignitaries across the globe.

The extraordinary life of Julia Vrooman included an intellectual powerhouse, who wrote articles, essays, and even a novel. Julia’s sense of adventure and compassion led her to travel through Europe in a motorcycle sidecar, organizing cocoa parties for homesick soldiers and entertaining them as part of a jazz band. Her frugality and absence of children allowed her and Carl to channel their wealth towards charitable causes they held dear.
