Warm one day, cool the next: that's fall in the Midwest, and soon the leaves will let us know there's no turning back. It's the start of one of the best fall foliage stretches around, and there's nothing like watching it unfold here in central Illinois.
Come stay at Vrooman Mansion bed and breakfast for a leaf-peeping experience that's hard to beat. We sit halfway between Chicago and St. Louis, making our mansion an easy home base.
Quick answer: The best fall foliage near Bloomington, IL, fills Constitution Trail, Moraine View State Park, and Sugar Grove Nature Center. Expect the deepest color from mid-October through early November.
Our 5 Favorite Places for Fall Foliage
These five spots are our top picks for the best places to see fall colors around Bloomington-Normal, each an easy drive from our mansion.
Constitution Trail
This paved trail, lined with arching maples, runs more than 50 miles through Bloomington-Normal. Trail access sits just blocks from our front door, so you can start here right after breakfast.
Hidden Creek Nature Sanctuary
Just across town in Normal, Hidden Creek Nature Sanctuary turns bird-watching into a color hunt. Marshes and woodland edges glow amber as fall deepens, edging us one step closer to winter. Grab a cup from our coffee station before heading out early to enjoy the color show. And bring your phone or camera! You'll want those autumn pictures.
Funks Grove Nature Spaces
Funks Grove Nature Spaces offers 18 acres of oaks and sugar maples surrounding seven miles of trails in McLean. And it's only about 11 miles south of us.
Merwin Nature Preserve
Less than half an hour northeast in Lexington, an easy two-mile loop hugs the Mackinaw River under a towering oak canopy. It stays quiet on the weekends, which is nice. The lake also draws anglers at sunrise, and the woods show some of the boldest color around.
Moraine View State Park
About 18 miles east of Vrooman Mansion, Moraine View State Park pairs foliage with a 158-acre lake and trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Its open shoreline and picnic grounds make this a favorite place to linger over lunch. Shaded camping areas and an archery range also sit nearby, so it's easy to stretch a visit into a full afternoon.

Where We Love to Take a Scenic Fall Color Drive
Route 66 makes the best scenic drive to see autumn leaves near Bloomington. We send guests south toward Funks Grove, past red barns and maple stands, catching the afternoon light. Loop back through the Franklin Square Historic District, where brick buildings frame the color. Then head back for cider on the veranda. It's one of our favorite fall date ideas in Bloomington, IL, and you can finish the loop in an afternoon.
A Self-Guided Hike We Recommend for Fall Color
Merwin Nature Preserve's two-mile loop is our top pick for a self-guided fall hike near Bloomington. The path is well marked, with the Mackinaw River in view most of the way. Ask our concierge for directions, and we'll even pack a thermos.
Where We Send Guests to Rent a Bike
Constitution Trail is where to go for fall foliage bike rides or autumn nature hikes in the Bloomington area, especially with maples arching overhead. We recommend Cloud of Goods, which delivers rental bikes right to Vrooman Mansion. Reserve online, then pedal straight onto the trail. Our front desk keeps a list of favorite routes.

Our Favorite Picnic Spots for Leaf-Peeping
These three parks make it easy to pair fall foliage viewing with a packed lunch, each with picnic facilities near Bloomington. Grab snacks from our 24-hour pantry before you go.
Comlara Park and Evergreen Lake
Comlara Park has more than 30 miles of trails to explore. Some wind past Six Mile Creek before opening onto Evergreen Lake, where picnic tables sit right at the water's edge. Bring a blanket and stay for sunset if the weather holds.
Sugar Grove Nature Center
Picnic tables near the trailhead let you rest under the oaks before or after a walk. The old-growth grove here is one of the last in Illinois, with an oak-prairie mix that turns some of the richest color around.
