Experience a weekend of Victorian mansions, gardens and charm! Visit the Glorious Garden Festival in Bloomington, IL at the David Davis Mansion, June 21-22 combined with a luxurious overnight stay at our historic Vrooman Mansion bed and breakfast.
The David Davis Mansion, a state historic site, was part of Abraham Lincoln’s story as well as Davis’ own accomplishments. Davis was a friend and adviser to Abraham Lincoln from his time in Springfield through his time in Washington. For this event, however, Sarah’s Garden is the star of the show. In its own regard, it is a nationally recognized part of history and the main feature of a multi-private garden tour.
Historic Garden
The garden is just as Davis’ wife, Sarah, designed it in 1872. The garden has not been relocated nor re-created. Not only does it boast the same location and many of the original pathways and garden beds, but several of the plants date back to the original garden. Gardeners and historians are working to restore all of the 120 plants known to have been in the garden during Sarah Davis’ tenor; at least 70 can be found presently.
Those 120 plant varieties in Sarah’s garden were from various sources, including the area woods, her Massachusetts’ home, Jefferson’s Monticello, and neighbors. Since Sarah and Vrooman’s first Julia, Julia Scott, were contemporaries and neighbors, it is quite possible that some of Sarah’s flowers came from Vrooman’s gardens.
Victorian Bed and Breakfast
Enjoy the Garden Walk as part of the festival and the museum as well. Then come live a weekend in Victorian splendor. See the technologies Julia and Sarah marveled over in the 18th century, but appreciate the amenities of today next to the elegance of yesterday. The rooms are antique-appointed, many with items original to the mansion.
Throughout the mansion, guests will see the attention to detail and the authentic décor. Here you’re invited to relax and explore in the common areas, including a parlor, library, patio, and several nooks. Take advantage of our beautiful outdoor lounging space as well.
